Will you join us in protecting children?

In Allegany County and throughout the nation:
     • A child is sexually abused every 2 minutes.
     • One in 4 girls and one in 6 boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday.
     • Children in rural areas are almost 2x more likely to be identified as victims of child sexual abuse.
     • Children with no parent in the labor force are 3x more likely to be the victims of neglect than children with employed parents.

In 2020, Jane’s Place Allegany County Child Advocacy Center will see between 150-200 child and adolescent victims of abuse for specialized services, and Jane’s Place will reach more than 2,000 adults and children through our child victimization prevention and outreach efforts.

Did you know that the total lifetime cost for each living victim of child maltreatment is estimated to be $210,012 – a figure comparable to other costly health conditions, such as stroke ($159,846/person) or type 2 diabetes ($181,000 to $253,000/person), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention? Jane’s Place, both a place and a team of people, helps children ages 0-18 and their families recover from the devastation of child abuse by providing forensically sound interviews, scheduling for medical examinations, on-site therapy, and follow-up services. All of these services are provided free of charge.

Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to Jane’s Place. Your gift will directly impact these local children and families in need of services, and our community.

Donations can be mailed or made online through our secure site (see DONATE button above). If you have any questions or would like to discuss another way you can join us in protecting children, please contact Jane's Place at 301-722-0016.

Who are the Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse?

  1. Most children who are sexually abused are victimized by someone they know (9 of 10); this includes relatives (25%), family friends, clergy, teachers, and babysitters.
  2.  No valid profile of a perpetrator exists – it can be anyone.
  3. Some children and adolescents sexually abuse other children (40%).
  4. Perpetrators can be of any race, religious belief or sexual orientation.
  5. Many perpetrators are well-educated and respected members of the community.

Shared Hope Study

Who are the typical "buyers" of sex acts with minors? How are the cases handled? What can we do support child victims? This 2014 study by Shared Hope International is well worth the read. Of the cases studied, 99% of buyers were male; buyers ranged in age from 18-89 with a median age of 42.5.
