Our Namesake: Jane Dawson

Jane’s Place was named in 2010 in memory of the late Mrs. Jane Dawson, a local child advocate. Jane, a former nurse and nursing instructor at the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, led numerous programs for Allegany County’s Board of Education, from its Family Life curriculum to its D.A.R.E. program. She was elected to the Board of Education in 2001 to 2004, and served as its President from 2006 to until her passing in 2009.

In addition to her love of teddy bears and the feeling of security they impart to children of all ages, Jane is remembered fondly for her warm demeanor, her kindness, and her heartfelt dedication to serving our county’s children.
Jane's Place, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a child-friendly environment committed to reducing the trauma to children who have been abused, neglected or sexually assaulted and provide them the space where they can begin to heal.
